Description

The Content Director leads Illinois Legal Aid Online’s (ILAO) content team, including content managers, producers and contributors, to deliver reliable, understandable solutions to people with legal problems and attorneys who provide free and low-cost legal services. Content is core to ILAO's mission and services; it informs, educates, empowers and guides individuals and families with legal problems to solutions. The Content Director supervises and directs the content team and is responsible for creating and implementing content strategies that align with ILAO's mission and user's needs. The Content Director reports to ILAO’s Program Director.

Responsibilities:

Lead content team to publish high-quality, user-centered content (45%)

  • Motivate, direct and supervise content team in development and improvement of content on ILAO’s websites and mobile apps, from conception to promotion and evaluation
  • Create content strategies that meet user needs and business goals, and ensure they are implemented by the content team
  • Create master editorial calendar and ensure compliance by content managers and producers
  • Develop metrics and reporting framework for evaluating content performance and user experience; analyze data and implement improvements
  • Keep abreast of law, policy or program changes that may affect ILAO's content or users; communicate updates to appropriate staff
  • Oversee usability testing and evaluation of new and existing content; oversee improvements to content
  • Develop and enforce content governance standards, including style guide, content management processes and workflows
  • Hold content team accountable for content quality and meeting all publishing and production deadlines
  • Support content managers to motivate and recruit subject matter experts, translators and interns to serve as content contributors
  • Develop training and support knowledge base for content team and oversee ongoing maintenance by team
  • Apply and enforce best practices for search and marketing for optimal user experience (UX) and content discovery

Collaborate with ILAO staff to ensure useful and usable products and services (20%)

  • Partner with product owners, internal business stakeholders and functional teams to define content requirements and strategies to best achieve business goals and user needs
  • Participate as member of tech / UX project team to ensure content and design meet business objectives and user needs
  • Partner with tech / UX team to define user models and interfaces for new and updated features and functionality
  • Work with tech / UX team to improve front-end (user-facing) and back-end (content management) functionality and user experience

Increase visibility of ILAO's products and services (20%)

  • Oversee pilots of new ways to package, distribute and promote content via social media and other online and offline channels
  • Cultivate mutually beneficial partnerships with lawyers, law schools, bar associations and legal aid organizations
  • Conduct outreach and education sessions to increase ILAO's visibility
  • Serve as the ILAO representative for one or more of the Illinois Supreme Court Access to Justice Commission's statewide forms subcommittees
  • Participate in local and statewide collaborations related to legal aid, legal technology, language access, plain language and other topics relevant to ILAO

Other activities (15%)

  • Keep current with emerging technologies and content management best practices
  • Conduct yearly performance appraisals of content team members
  • Identify and pursue potential funding sources; draft grant proposals and reports
  • Participate in fundraising events and campaigns
  • Participate in staff meetings and other administrative meetings
  • Other responsibilities as assigned

  • Understanding of the use and promotion of various content types online (text/HTML, video, image, files/downloads, automated documents, hyperlink)

Education/Experience:

  • Law degree (J.D.) or journalism or marketing degree required
  • Minimum 5 years experience publishing online content
  • Minimum 2 years experience supervising others, including staff, volunteers and contractors
  • Expertise distilling complicated concepts into understandable, actionable resources
  • Experience developing and implementing strategies that address how content will meet business goals and user needs and the people, processes and tools to get it done
  • Experience implementing information architecture, conducting usability testing and converting information to plain language
  • Experience developing and executing publishing online workflows and using content management systems
  • Experience using legal technology, such as form preparation programs and case management systems
  • Experience using Google Analytics or similar tools to evaluate content performance
  • Understanding of search engine optimization (SEO)
  • Expertise using social media to engage users and promote content, including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn and other popular platforms
  • Superior proficiency in using computers and mobile devices including fluency in using the Internet, mobile apps, Google Apps and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), with the ability to quickly learn new software programs
  • Preference given to candidates with:
    • SEO and marketing experience
    • Experience with Articulate Storyline, Moodle or other eLearning tools
    • Experience using constituent relationship management systems such as Salesforce
